You bought 500 shares at $50.60 and the position went nowhere. Later you wonder whether $50.60 was even a sensible price to have paid. The problem is that “sensible” needs a reference point, and the obvious candidates are bad ones. The closing price is where the last few shares changed hands, not where most of them did. The midpoint of the day’s range ignores whether the day spent six hours at the high or six minutes there.
VWAP answers the question properly: it gives you the average price paid by the average share traded so far today. If VWAP sits at $50.38 and you paid $50.60, you paid above what the day’s typical share cost. That is a measurement, not a signal, and the usefulness of VWAP flows from taking it seriously as a measurement rather than trading its crossovers.
What VWAP computes, and why that is not a moving average
VWAP stands for Volume Weighted Average Price. The calculation is a running total divided by a running total:
VWAP = (cumulative typical price × volume) ÷ (cumulative volume)
Typical price is (high + low + close) ÷ 3 — one number standing in for where a bar traded, rather than only where it finished. Multiply that by the bar’s volume to get the dollar value transacted in that bar, then keep a running sum of both the numerator and the denominator from the session open forward.
This differs from a simple or exponential moving average in two independent ways, and both matter.
Weighting. A 20-period SMA gives each of its 20 closes exactly 1/20 of the weight, whether that bar traded 3,000 shares or 3 million. VWAP weights every bar by the shares that actually changed hands in it. A high-volume bar moves VWAP a lot; a dead bar barely moves it. Window. An SMA is a rolling window that drops the oldest bar each time a new one arrives. VWAP drops nothing — every bar since the session open stays in both totals permanently. That cumulative nature drives most of VWAP’s behavior, including its worst weakness, covered below. The EMA versus SMA comparison is about how to weight recent bars; VWAP is not competing in that contest at all.
Put plainly: a moving average is a smoothing filter applied to price. VWAP is an accounting fact about executed transactions.
Working through three bars of arithmetic
Take a stock with these three one-minute bars.

Bar 1’s typical price is (50.40 + 49.80 + 50.10) ÷ 3 = 150.30 ÷ 3 = 50.10. Bar 2’s is (50.70 + 50.05 + 50.60) ÷ 3 = 151.35 ÷ 3 = 50.45. Bar 3’s is (50.90 + 50.35 + 50.40) ÷ 3 = 151.65 ÷ 3 = 50.55.
Now accumulate. After bar 1, VWAP is 6,012,000 ÷ 120,000 = 50.10 — with one bar, VWAP equals that bar’s typical price.
After bar 2, the numerator is 6,012,000 + 15,135,000 = 21,147,000 and the denominator is 120,000 + 300,000 = 420,000. VWAP = 21,147,000 ÷ 420,000 = 50.35.
After bar 3, the numerator is 21,147,000 + 4,044,000 = 25,191,000 and the denominator is 500,000. VWAP = 25,191,000 ÷ 500,000 = 50.382, so $50.38.
Compare that to an unweighted average of the three typical prices: (50.10 + 50.45 + 50.55) ÷ 3 = 151.10 ÷ 3 = 50.367. VWAP came out higher because bar 2 sat above the unweighted mean and carried 300,000 of the 500,000 shares — 60% of everything traded.
The same prices with volume moved around
Keep all nine price values identical and swap the volumes on bars 2 and 3, so bar 2 trades 80,000 and bar 3 trades 300,000. The numerator becomes 6,012,000 + (50.45 × 80,000 = 4,036,000) + (50.55 × 300,000 = 15,165,000) = 25,213,000. Total volume is still 500,000. VWAP = 25,213,000 ÷ 500,000 = 50.426.
Identical price action, identical total volume, and VWAP moved 4.4 cents. That difference is the whole point of the indicator. VWAP does not track where price went; it tracks where the shares went.
Why VWAP resets at the session open
VWAP is defined over a session, and at the next open the running totals go back to zero. That follows from what VWAP is for. “The average price paid per share today” is a coherent statistic. “The average price paid per share since some unspecified point in the past” is not, because it drifts toward whatever the largest-volume period happened to be, however long ago.
Two consequences follow. First, the bars right after the open are unstable: with five minutes in the denominator, VWAP swings on almost every bar, and it only becomes a stable reference once a meaningful share of the day’s volume sits behind it.
Second, VWAP does not carry across days. Yesterday’s VWAP is not a level on today’s chart. Traders who want a longer reference use anchored VWAP, resetting accumulation from a chosen event — an earnings release, a swing low, a breakout bar — rather than from the clock. Same formula, deliberately chosen start point.
Why institutions use VWAP as an execution benchmark
This is the reason VWAP matters at all, and it has nothing to do with chart patterns.
A fund that needs to buy 4 million shares cannot send one order. It slices the position across the session. Afterwards, someone has to judge whether the trader did the job well, and the standard yardstick is VWAP: did the average fill price beat the day’s volume weighted average? Buy 4 million shares at an average of $50.31 against a session VWAP of $50.38 and you saved seven cents a share — $280,000. Many desks are compensated against exactly this benchmark, and algorithmic execution strategies are explicitly built to track it.
That creates real behaviour around the line: buyers working large orders become more willing below VWAP and more reluctant above it, because their scorecard says so. This is what people are gesturing at when they call VWAP “where institutions defend price.” It is a genuine effect in liquid markets — but a behavioural one produced by how traders are measured, not a law of physics, and it is largely absent in thinly traded names.
Reading VWAP as intraday support and resistance
Because of that benchmark pressure, VWAP often acts as a dynamic level: price pulls back to it, buyers who are behind on their day step in, and price resumes. Unlike a horizontal level drawn at a prior high, VWAP moves through the session, so the level you are watching at 10:15 is not the level at 14:30.
Two readings coexist, and confusing them is the most common way traders misuse the indicator.
Mean reversion applies in a balanced, range-bound session. Price stretches away from VWAP, the stretch has no volume behind it, and it snaps back. Traders fade extensions and target VWAP itself.
Trend continuation applies in a directional session. Price moves away from VWAP and never comes back for more than a touch, so fading extensions means fighting the trend all day. This read treats a pullback to VWAP that holds as an entry in the direction of the existing move, and a decisive close through VWAP as the trend failing.
The honest version is that you cannot know which of the two you are in until the session has partly played out. What you can check is whether price has crossed VWAP repeatedly today or stayed on one side. Repeated crosses mean the mean-reversion read has been working; one-sided sessions mean it has not.
Some platforms add standard deviation bands — VWAP plus and minus one, two, or three standard deviations of price from VWAP. They give the “stretched” idea a number instead of an eyeball, and a touch of the second band is the usual fade trigger. They are a genuine refinement, and they inherit every limitation below. Where VWAP breaks down
It gets slower all session. By 15:30, the denominator holds six hours of volume. A single new bar barely moves the average, no matter how violent it is. VWAP is at its most responsive when it is least reliable and at its most reliable when it is least responsive, and nothing fixes that — it is arithmetic.
It is meaningless above the intraday timeframe. A cumulative session average has no interpretation on a daily or weekly chart. There is no session to reset to. If you are holding positions across days, VWAP is not your tool; see day trading versus swing trading for what changes with holding period.
It is only as good as the volume data behind it. VWAP is a volume weighted statistic, so bad volume data produces a confidently wrong line. Retail feeds that miss off-exchange prints, or instruments where reported volume is unreliable, will hand you a VWAP that no institution is actually benchmarking against.
And like every indicator, VWAP is backward-looking. It summarises transactions that already happened. It cannot tell you the session is about to reverse.
Practice reading VWAP on the simulator
Stockade’s charts carry a VWAP toggle on both /simulator and the chart simulator, computed with the same formula as above — typical price times volume, accumulated and divided. The anchor differs, though, and the difference is worth knowing: the simulator’s line never resets at a session open. It accumulates over a rolling window of the most recent candles, so what you are reading is an anchorless running VWAP rather than the session VWAP the reset section above describes. Same arithmetic, no anchor. Turn it on and drill the mechanical skill: is price above or below, how far has it stretched, is this session crossing the line or riding one side of it. Be clear on what you are practising, though. Stockade’s prices are generated client-side by random walks, and its volume is a random number drawn per candle, uncorrelated with price movement. There is no real participation behind it, so volume there confirms nothing and the institutional benchmark effect does not exist. That hollows out the line itself, which is worth being explicit about: the simulator’s VWAP code weights every bar by that random volume, and random weights are effectively uniform weights, so the drawn line behaves close to an unweighted average of typical price rather than a true volume weighted one. The weighting distinction described near the top of this article is real, but it is not what you are looking at here — of the two things separating VWAP from a moving average, only the cumulative window is observable on Stockade. It is real arithmetic on invented inputs — good for training your eye, useless as a signal.
One caution outlives the simulator: fills there carry almost no friction — no bid-ask spread, no partial fills, and only a few cents of slippage when a stop or target triggers — and there is no real money at stake. Waiting for price to come back to VWAP instead of chasing is the hard part, and it is exactly the part paper trading does not test.
