You went to sleep with an asset at $67,843 and woke up to $59,702. Nothing broke. No exchange halted. There was no closing bell to stop the slide and no opening auction to reprice it in one clean jump — the price simply walked down through the night while you were unconscious, and a 12% decline took $8,141 off every unit you held.
That is an ordinary week in crypto. The same 12% on a $50,000 position is $6,000 gone. Equities have a closing bell, circuit breakers, a regulator, and a custodian. Crypto has none of those. What matters before you trade it is not what the coins claim to do, but how the market around them is built.
Why 24/7 trading changes risk management, not just convenience
US equities trade about 6.5 hours a day, five days a week — roughly 32.5 hours. Crypto trades 168. That is more than five times the exposure, and the extra hours are not a bonus feature. They are the part where you are not watching.
Equity risk management leans on the close in ways traders rarely notice. The bell forces a decision — hold or flatten — and creates a window where nothing can happen to you, followed by a morning where you reassess with a clear head. It also concentrates the surprise into a gap you can plan around: one jump at 9:30, not a continuous drip.
Crypto deletes all of that. There is no moment when your position is safe by default and no reassessment window. The practical consequences:
- Your stop is your only overnight protection. Not a mental level, not an intention to check the chart — a resting order. A mental stop only works when you are awake.
- Position size has to survive an unattended move. Ask what happens if the asset moves 15% against you while you sleep, because it can and does.
- There are no circuit breakers. In US equities, a 7% S&P 500 decline halts trading for 15 minutes. Crypto has no equivalent. A cascade of liquidations runs until it runs out.

Centralized exchanges versus decentralized exchanges
Crypto trades in two structurally different venues, and they fail in different ways.
A centralized exchange (CEX) works like a broker crossed with a bank. You deposit money, the exchange credits your account, and you trade a conventional order book with bids and asks. Your coins live in the exchange’s internal ledger, not on the blockchain. Deep books, fast fills, familiar order types — and complete dependence on the operator staying solvent and honest.
A decentralized exchange (DEX) is a smart contract you interact with from your own wallet. Most use an automated market maker: rather than matching you against another trader, you swap against a pooled reserve of two assets, and the pool’s formula sets the price. Nobody holds your funds. But you pay network fees on every swap, your trade is visible before it confirms, and there is no support desk — a swap sent to the wrong contract is simply gone.
Neither is safer in general. A CEX exposes you to the operator; a DEX exposes you to the code and to your own mistakes, with no reversal mechanism for either.
Custody, private keys, and “not your keys, not your coins”
A crypto balance on an exchange screen is a database entry that says the exchange owes you coins. Actual ownership on-chain is controlled by a private key — a secret number that authorizes spending. Whoever has the key has the coins. That is the whole security model.
Hence the slogan: not your keys, not your coins. If the exchange holds the keys, you hold a claim against a company, not an asset. That distinction is theoretical right up to the moment it is not. Mt. Gox failed in 2014, QuadrigaCX in 2019, FTX in 2022 — customers with balances on a screen and no coins behind them.
Self-custody moves the risk rather than removing it. You hold the key, usually as a 12- or 24-word seed phrase, and the failure modes become yours: lose the phrase and the funds are unrecoverable, forever; let someone photograph it and they drain the wallet in one irreversible transaction. No password reset, no fraud department, no chargeback.
Active trading needs exchange balances, so the usual compromise is to keep on an exchange only what you are actively trading and move the rest to self-custody.
Market capitalization versus price: why a $0.004 token can be bigger than a $340 one
Beginners routinely buy a coin because it is “cheap.” Price per unit tells you nothing about size, because token supplies differ by many orders of magnitude.
Market capitalization is price times circulating supply — the units actually in the market today.

The $0.004 token is the larger asset by roughly 47%. For it to reach $340, its market cap would have to exceed $170 trillion — more than every public company on earth combined. “It only needs to get to a dollar” is a sentence that has never survived multiplication.
One more number to check: fully diluted valuation, price times maximum supply. If Token A’s cap is 1 trillion units, its FDV is $4 billion — double the circulating figure. That extra half is unreleased supply, often vesting to insiders, that future buyers have to absorb.
Stablecoins are the currency crypto actually quotes in
Most crypto does not trade against dollars. It trades against stablecoins — tokens designed to hold a $1 peg, usually backed by reserves of cash and short-term government debt. They exist because bank dollars are slow and closed on weekends, while a market that never closes needs a settlement asset that never closes either.
Practically, a stablecoin is your cash position. When you flatten, you are not in dollars; you are in a token issued by a private company, holding reserves you cannot audit yourself. Pegs have broken. If a stablecoin trades at $0.94, a $50,000 “cash” balance is worth $47,000 — a $3,000 loss taken while flat. Know which one your quotes are denominated in, and treat that as a real decision.
Volatility and liquidity: how crypto compares to equities
A large-cap equity index moving 3% in a day is a headline event. Major crypto assets have posted double-digit single-day moves many times over. Annualized volatility for a broad equity index has historically sat in the teens; for major crypto it has often run several times that, and smaller tokens are worse.
The direct consequence is smaller positions for the same dollar risk. Take a $10,000 account risking 1%, or $100, per trade:

Same $100 at risk, less than half the notional exposure. Traders who skip this step and carry an equity-sized position into a crypto-sized stop are the ones taking 5% account losses on a single trade.
Liquidity splits just as sharply. The top handful of assets absorb large orders without much impact. Everything below them is thin: if a small-cap token’s order book only holds $80,000 of offers within 1% of the mid, a $250,000 market buy walks up through several levels and might average 3.2% above mid — $8,000 of slippage on entry, with the same problem waiting on the exit.
Why reported crypto volume is the least trustworthy number on your screen
In equities, venues report volume to regulators under legal obligation. In crypto, unregulated exchanges self-report, and their ranking on aggregator sites drives listings and fees. The incentive to inflate is direct.
Wash trading — buying and selling with yourself to manufacture volume — is the standard method. A 2019 analysis submitted to the SEC concluded that roughly 95% of reported bitcoin spot volume was non-economic. Later research has found smaller but still substantial fractions on unregulated venues.
So a token showing “$2 billion daily volume” may have $100 million of real trading behind it, and every volume-based technique degrades accordingly. The core volume concepts still hold; the inputs are just far less reliable here. Order book depth on regulated venues and on-chain transfer data are better evidence than a reported volume figure.
What crypto markets do not give you
Be clear-eyed about the missing infrastructure. There is no equivalent of SIPC coverage for a failed crypto exchange — creditors of bankrupt venues have spent years in court for partial recoveries. Manipulation that would draw enforcement in equities is common and largely unpoliced. Listings carry no disclosure standard comparable to a public filing.
And the 24/7 clock is a psychological trap as much as a structural one. Equities impose a break; crypto never does. Every hour is one you could be trading, which is exactly the condition that produces overtrading, revenge trading, and decisions made at 3 a.m. — the most common day trading mistakes, with the one external guardrail removed. The discipline has to be entirely self-imposed: defined session hours, a hard stop time, and resting orders that work while you are not.
